Overview:

The Thermal Imaging Viewer (T-iV) is a fully self-contained, state-of-the-art thermal imaging camera designed for medium to long range surveillance.

Operational Uses

The T-iV enables you to:

  • Operate in TOTAL darkness
  • Operate Day or Night
  • Detect human targets at ranges exceeding 1Km
  • Detect recently disturbed ground (buried objects)
  • Detect vehicles at ranges well in excess of 2.5Km
  • Operate in battlefield smoke, mist or teargas
  • Detect potential targets in light foliage
  • Identify recently operated vehicles
  • Detect hidden compartments

The unit is designed for professional organisations including:

  • Border security organisations
  • Police
  • Customs
  • Anti-terrorist organisations

In addition, as the T-iV is entirely passive, it cannot easily be detected, ensuring covert surveillance is maintained and enhancing your security.

Design Features
Based on European IR detector technology the T-iV offers:

Maximum Performance
The T-iV family are designed to maximise target detection, recognition and identification range enabling you to react appropriately and efficiently.

The camera is available in two forms:

  • T-iV320 – based on a 320 x 240 pixel focal plane array infrared detector, the T-iV meets or exceeds the requirement to detect a man target at a range in excess of 1000m.
  • T-iVSnapshot - based on the same 320 x 240 detector, but has the added feature of image storage. The T-iVSnapshot can store up to 100 images on board, which can be downloaded to a computer for later analysis.
  • T-iVHR – virtually identical to the standard T-iV, this high resolution version utilises the latest 384 x 288 pixel array to provide an increase in system resolution by 44%... with a corresponding increase in recognition and identification ranges.

In addition to the detector resolution, the T-iV family utilises a near diffraction limit aspheric lens.  This ensures that the system resolution is not compromised by the optics and again ensures recognition and identification ranges are not compromised by poor system design.

High Thermal Sensitivity
High thermal sensitivity is an important system parameter as it directly determines detection, recognition and identification ranges.  The T-iV achieves the required performance by utilising:

  • High sensitivity IR Detectors
  • High transmission Optics
  • Fast Optics (F1.0)

The use of fast optics is vitally important.  Many competitors use F1.3 optics to reduce costs.  However, F1,3 optics have over 40% lower energy gathering ability which DIRECTLY reduces achievable target detection, recognition and identification ranges.

All T-iV variants use F1.0 optics to ensure that overall system performance is not compromised and maximum detection, recognition and identification ranges are realised.

System Flexibility
There are occasions when longer range surveillance is demanded.  The T-iV incorporates a unique system of ‘snap-on’ range extenders that can increase the overall focal length by 33% or 100%.  The use of these extenders effectively increases recognition and identification ranges in proportion to the increase in focal length. 
Furthermore, as the extenders snap-on, the intrinsic seal of the camera is not compromised and the extenders can be fitted in the field without the use of purging equipment and/or clean rooms and without the possibility of water, dust or other containments entering the camera body.

From the outset, the T-iV has been designed in conjunction with Professional Bodies such as Border Guards, Police and Customs.  To meet their needs, the T-iV family incorporates a number of design features as follows:

Operating Duration & Logistics
During a surveillance operation, there is nothing worse that having your battery run out leaving you fumbling to find a replacement battery or, worse, blind and unable to continue surveillance operations.

Recognising this, the T-iV was designed for low power operation with the result that the camera will operate for between EIGHT and TEN hours… unrivalled by any other comparable IR camera on the market today.

Furthermore, to simplify in-field logistics and reduce your cost of ownership, the T-iV uses standard, commercially available Sony batteries and not an expensive/unique battery available only from the camera manufacturer.

Integral Lens – Ease of Use

The integral lens has a number of major benefits as follows:

  • Sealing – as the lens is fully integral, there are no moving parts (focus ring etc) that need to be sealed against water and dust ingress.  This directly leads to reduced system weight, a more robust system design and higher reliability.
  • Remote Control – as the lens in fully integral, focus can be remotely controlled without the use of heavy, expensive, unreliable and complex bolt-on focus motors typically used by some competitors.
  • Focus Ease – focus adjustments can be made with one hand.

Covert and Standby Modes – Enhanced Security

A problem often found with night observation devices is that, at night, the light from the display can be detected – especially when the camera is removed from the observers’ eyes.  To combat this, the T-iV family incorporates a facility to instantly switch on or off the display.  Ergonomically located on the underside of the camera and activated by the thumb, this ‘covert’ button prevents light escaping from the display making it virtually impossible to be detected.

In addition, the T-iV family incorporates a Standby Mode.  Designed for situations where you want to conduct surveillance remotely, this mode of operation powers down the display (no light escapes) but still enables you to display the video information on a remote display unit.  In the Standby Mode, all other functions (Zoom, Polarity, Focus etc.) still function normally.


Controls & Handling

In consultation with many users, the unit  has been designed to provide you with all of the controls you need without having to navigate through complex and confusing menu structures. 
Controls are all ergonomically designed with those most frequently used falling directly under your fingers.  All buttons are recessed to prevent inadvertent operation and have universally accepted symbology that defines their function.
The T-iV provides you with all the controls, features and facilities you will ever need… but is very simple to use!

Weight

Lightweight equipment is important.  Operators typically have to carry their equipment sometimes over long distances, often over difficult terrain.
The T-iV is the lightest unit in its class.  Its total weight of 1.6Kg, complete with integral 75mm lens, is unmatched within the industry. 

Remote Control
To cater for covert surveillance operations, the T-iV incorporates full remote control facilities and a PAL format video output.

Display
Simplicity of use is key.  Many other cameras require each eyepiece to be focused and the separation between the eyepiece optics to be adjusted for each and every user. 
In contrast, by using sophisticated display optics, the T-iV display can be viewed by any user without any adjustments whatsoever!  This simplifies equipment handover (user passing the camera to another user) and increases overall reliability by eliminating complex and vulnerable sealing arrangements found on other units.

Video Image Colourisation
Some camera suppliers claim that artificially colourising the thermal image enhances clarity.  For temperature measurement cameras, this is often true as it enable the user to see temperature gradients.  However, in surveillance applications, the reverse in true… colourising the image degrades the users perception of the image and makes it significantly more difficult to interpret.
