What is TMP-Tyre Protect?

TMP-TYRE PROTECT fitted, you have the piece of mind knowing that you can remain in control and mobile, should your tyre deflate - at any speed - on any surface.

CONTROL

With the tyre kept in place by the TMP-TYRE PROTECT safety band, steering, braking and cornering control can be maintained at any speed after a simple puncture or an instantaneous blow-out.

SAFETY greatly reduces the risk of accident and fatality through loss of control after tyre deflation.

MOBILITY provides traction plus a short runflat or get-out capability. The driver can continue to a safe place to change the wheel.

Why TMP-Tyre Protect?
When a tyre deflates, air pressure can no longer hold it in its correct place on the wheel, so it becomes free to move about and the tyre's beads can slip over and into the 'well' of the wheel allowing the tyre to flail, or dangerously flap about. Steering control is lost and the flapping tyre can cause serious damage to the vehicle: damaging brake pipes, suspension and bodywork.

The Wheel Well
Every wheel has to be made with a 'well' in it, otherwise it is impossible to fit the tyre.

TMP-TYRE PROTECT is simply attached over the wheel's well after the tyre has been fitted and so will support a deflated tyre, through preventing it from slipping into the well. Stability is significantly increased and therefore steering, braking and cornering control.

As the tyre gradually deflates, air pressure inside becomes lower and heat build-up occurs until a critical point is reached, where the pressure is no longer sufficient to hold the tyre in its correct place on the wheel.

At this point, mostly in a cornering maneuver where extra forces are applied, the tyre bead will move from its 'seat' against the wheel rim, freeing the remaining air (that's normally the 'bang' you hear). With the tyre now fully deflated, it will flap about uselessly, the rim will no longer grip the tyre and the wheel may contact the road surface. At high speeds this condition is usually fatal, however good your driving skills are.

In high-speed blowouts the consequences can be catastrophic, with little or no steering control the vehicle can quickly veer off erratically in unpredictable directions. The vehicle (left centre) smashed into the centre crash barrier of the M40 motorway, bounced off and began a series of barrel rolls involving other motorway traffic, after a front tyre blow-out.1 fatality.

Punctures and blow-outs, thankfully are not a very common occurrence these days due to the design and high manufacturing quality of modern tyres. But, however tough, however well maintained and checked, picking up penetrable debris from the roads is unavoidable.
When this happens a tyre will not normally deflate immediately but over a period of time.

Performance Test
1. The purpose of this User Assessment (UA) was to conduct an initial user evaluation of the performance, technical and operational characteristics, specifications, and capabilities of the TMP-Tyre Protect ATR, super duty, long range Runflat as well as conduct a comparison with current-service Runflat offered by Hutchinson. The UA was conducted utilizing the US Special Operations Command Ground Mobility Vehicle (GMV) at Fort Campbell, KY by the lead Mobility Non-Commissioned Officer (NCOIC) of the 5th Special Forces Group (A), Force Modernization Section.

3. User Assessment Conditions:
In June 2009, the Ground Mobility NCOIC conducted an initial UA and simulated a catastrophic, simultaneous failure of all four tyre systems. This was achieved by removing the valve stems of each wheel assembly and letting the air out of the tyres. The wheel assemblies were provided by Tryon and consisted of four Goodyear 16.5” Wrangler MT/R (type tyres), four TMP-Tyre Protect ATR Runflats (pre-assembled) and four standard GMV Hayes-Lemmerz 16.5” wheels. The vehicle was driven for a total of 30 miles on paved surface roads, improved surface roads, trails and cross-country. 80% of the travel was conducted on paved surface roads. Road speeds between 0-60 mph were attempted and achieved. The majority of the road travel was conducted at 25-30 mph with accelerations to 60 by increments of 10 mph. Off-road speeds between 0-30 were attempted and achieved across varying types of terrain consistent with the topography of Fort Campbell, KY (rolling).
At the end of the UA, the wheel assemblies were removed from the vehicle and the tyres and Runflats were removed / disassembled.
The UA was ended because the Runflats exceeded performance claims and concerns that the tyres, which began to disintegrate, would damage the vehicle. The UA was not stopped because of Runflat performance issues, failure of the Runflats or damage caused to the GMV associated with the Runflat.

4. Remarks and observations:

The TMP-Tyre Protect ATR met and exceeded stated performance requirements currently in place with the HMMWV and GMV programs (30 mph/30 miles). Additionally, the TMP-Tyre Protect ATR met industry performance claims of 50 mph and 60 mph.
The only visible and noticeable factors were smoking from the valve stems when driving above 30 mph as well as degradation in vehicle power performance. This degradation can be attributed to the four tyres being flat and the vehicle driving on all four Runflats. The degradation was characterized by a loss in horsepower demonstrated by reduced top end speed and rate of acceleration. Upon removal of the tyre, mechanics and operators inspected the condition of the Runflat and recognized no appreciable damage to the Runflat. They were able to disassemble and reassemble the Runflat with ease and without any special tools. The Runflats were remounted along with new tyres for further use.

First test was carried out to the Finable standard, but without the tyre fitted, of 5 shots into the side of the runflat and 2 into the tread area from 50 meters with an AK47 using 7.62mm bullets and an M16 using 5.56mm bullets.
Special effort was made to hit the fixings with one bullet making a direct hit on the fixing head which ricocheted off and another hitting the washer and was absorbed.
The other three simply passed through the rubber system. The two shots into the tread area around the fixings where simply absorbed therefore none of the shooting had any effect on the performance of the runflat system. We carried out the same test at only 25 meters with the same results. In total we shot the runflat 35 times with no effect.

CONCLUSION

Without the added protection of the tyre, a total of 35 direct hits on the runflat all aimed at and around the fixings were simply absorbed.
It was therefore clearly demonstrated that under a severe ballistic attack, the TMP-Tyre Protect ATR could not be compromised even in the event of the fixings being repeatedly hit.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
A digital wireless system comprising wheel sensors and receiver. It allows you to see a readout of the pressure and temperatures in your tyres and gives a visual and audible alarm if your tyres need air. The portable receiver can be recharged from the cigarette lighter socket and will monitor up to 10 wheels, plus a spare, and a further 8 wheels on a trailer with the addition of extra wheel sensors.

The Problem
We all know we should check our tyres so why don’t we?...
...Probably because it’s too much trouble and they look OK anyway.

The problem is that when you can see your tyres need air, they are probably already 30 to 50% under-pressurized and not only is this very dangerous but it is actually costing you money - in fact hundreds of pounds a year.
Correct pressure is the most important factor for a tyre and, without TMP-Tyre Protect Safety Bands, it is the only thing keeping you on the road. Did you know that 90% of vehicles have at least one tyre incorrectly inflated and manufacturers estimate that 75% of “blowout” accidents are caused by incorrect pressure. What’s more.... underinflated tyres reduce your control and increase stopping distances.

The new Beadlock system is genuinely field mountable and demountable... taking only an extra 10 minutes to fit over standard tyre fitting times.

Performance
Immensely strong and performs in all temperature ranges - the Beadlock system is the lightest in its class.
By positively locking the tyre’s beads to the wheel’s flanges, the TMP-Tyre Protect Beadlock allows vehicles to operate with very low tyre inflation pressures and consequently gives a large tyre footprint to provide a greater area of traction contact such as that required for ultimate mobility in mud, sand and snow.
Rotation between the wheel rim and the tyre is prevented at pressures as low as 0.7 bar (10psi) on the heaviest vehicles. By effectively locking the tyre’s beads in place, mud, sand, water and other foreign objects are prevented from entering the tyre or becoming lodged between the tyre and the rim.

Steering and braking control are also maintained at low pressures, enhancing the safety and versatility of the vehicle.
For use with or without Central Tyre Inflation systems. We can provide a wide range, typically in all widths from 16” to 20” wheel diameters.
For customers requiring maximum adaptability when required to use a varying selection of tyre makes and sizes, an adjustable width TMP-Tyre Protect Beadlock can be supplied, allowing simple and swift fine tuning to provide the optimum fit for maximum performance in the field.

To further speed up and ensure fitting is a one-man job, an optional simple lightweight, collapsible fitting machine can be supplied, utilising the vehicle’s standard hydraulic/bottle jack to operate.
